Facebook logoDomain Names and their meanings.....

The most popular domain name extensions in the UK are .com or .co.uk and, wherever possible, we recommend these be used. Most of the other extensions listed below are used simply because the .com or .co.uk have already been registered by another user.

.com
represents the word “commercial” and is the most widely used extension in the world. Most businesses prefer a .com domain name because it is a highly recognised symbol for having a business presence on the internet

.co.uk
is the country code for the United Kingdom. The .co portion of the extension indicates the domain name is for commercial purposes (similar to a standard .com extension). It is unrestricted and may be registered by anyone – from any country. This is the most popular type of domain name for companies and individuals who trade or live in the UK such as www.paulhindle.co.uk

.net
represents the word “network” and is most commonly used by internet service providers, web-hosting companies or other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the Internet. Additionally some businesses choose domain names with a .net extension for their intranet websites.

.org
represents the word “organisation”, and is primarily used by non-profit groups or trade associations

.biz
is used for small business websites.

.info
is for credible resource websites and signifies a “resource” website. It’s the most popular extension after .com, .net, and .org

.tv
is for rich content/multi-media websites, commonly used within the entertainment or media industry.

.org.uk
is the country code for the United Kingdom. The .org portion of the extension indicates the domain name is for an organisation. It is unrestricted and may be registered by anyone – from any country.
An example is www.mbbcs.org.uk

.uk.com
is an alternative domain for the United Kingdom and could be considered if your preferred .co.uk or .com domain has already been registered by another user.

.so
is the new up-and-coming domain name extension! .so is the country code for Somalia but it can be used by anyone. If the word you wish to register ends in .so, you could get a snappy domain such as www.espres.so! It could also be used to signify a social website such as a forum or message board.

.mobi
is another new domain name extension and is aimed at companies, organisations or individuals wanting to create websites and services for mobile devices. However, any site using a .mobi domain name must be built using compliant mobile code, doesn’t use frames, and responds to requests from mobile devices at its primary URL.

.co
is another relatively new domain name extension. .co is the country code for Colombia. Anyone can buy and use .co domain names but if you’re looking to go into business in Colombia then it’s the idea one to use!
